Starship Troopers: Extermination Review
Starship Troopers: Extermination – Review
"Come on, you apes, you wanna live forever?" That’s the energy Starship Troopers: Extermination brings to the table. This 16-player co-op FPS takes the chaotic bug-blasting action of the 1997 cult classic and ramps it up to 11. In true Starship Troopers fashion, you’ll fight endless waves of Arachnids, build defenses, and scream into your mic as you desperately try to survive. The question is: will you and your squad of Roughnecks make it off-planet, or just end up as bug food?
Gameplay
If you've ever watched Starship Troopers and thought, "I want to be there... but, like, with friends," this game is basically your wish come true. Set in the far reaches of space, you’re part of the Deep Space Vanguard, tasked with defending planets from the relentless Arachnid menace. The core gameplay revolves around squad-based shooting, with up to 16 players working together to battle swarms of bugs while building defenses and extracting resources.
You'll need to build bases, defend objectives, and occasionally scream, "THEY'RE IN THE WALLS!" as waves of giant insects try to turn you into space dinner. The mix of shooting, strategy, and resource extraction keeps things frenetic and fun, but it can also be a little overwhelming when you're up to your knees in bug guts, trying to fix a broken turret.
The game features six playable classes, ranging from the rifle-toting Trooper to engineers focused on fortifications. Each class adds depth to the squad-based action, letting players specialize in key roles.
Graphics and Sound
Visually, Extermination doesn’t break new ground. The environments are vast, barren planets that look like they’ve seen better days—probably before the bug invasion. While the graphics won’t blow you away, they do an excellent job of making the environments feel hostile. When you're staring down hundreds of bugs scuttling toward you, you’re not worried about texture resolution.
The sound design, however, is a highlight. Gunfire is punchy, bugs screech with a terrifying urgency, and the frantic radio chatter between players makes you feel like you’re smack in the middle of an all-out war zone. It’s chaotic, but in a way that fits the universe perfectly.
Multiplayer and Replayability
This game shines when played with friends. Coordinating attacks, laying down turrets, and getting into tight scrapes with a team makes for a gripping experience. However, if you're playing solo or with a disorganized team, the fun can be... well, squashed. The bugs show no mercy, and a lack of teamwork can lead to some frustrating losses.
Offworld Industries has committed to supporting the game with regular updates, which means there’s more content on the horizon—just don’t expect a single-player mode to save the day anytime soon. Still, with the variety of classes, missions, and the unpredictable nature of battles, there’s plenty to keep you coming back, especially if you enjoy a good "would-you-like-to-know-more" vibe with friends.
Verdict
Starship Troopers: Extermination doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s a solid co-op shooter for fans of bug-squashing chaos. The frantic action, fun teamwork, and nostalgic references to the original film make it an enjoyable, if occasionally overwhelming, experience. The game’s visuals might be a bit dated, and solo players will likely have a harder time enjoying the chaos, but when it’s good, it’s very good.
